Cursed blessings and blessed cursing

During the brunch this morning, we had a talk over uncertainties and shocks in life. My friend S commented that we all go through two types of events: cursed blessings and blessed cursing. When you are in cursed blessing, you should play it cool, and you know the curse is going to end anyway. When you are in blessed cursing, you should not be taken away by your feeling of exuberance, because it will end in cursing ultimately.  Good philosophy.

But the difficulty with human life is that, all of our beliefs are biased towards the things that we want to believe. In Kahneman’s language, your “System 1” is always at work, while working of your “System 2” requires extra effort of self-control and composure. How can we “bootstrap” ourselves?

I already knew you would write on this the moment S talked about it.
